C[ode Video-Installation

This installation responds to the need to reconceptualize the archival image. The contemporary image is split between its specular surface, availed for human contemplation, and its digital, algorithmic depth that fuels the instrumental processes of interconnected global techno-political systems. C[ode flips the specular and instrumental division through a visual pixel aesthetic combined with an oral recitation of subtitled code. The instrumental is brought into the foreground as the focus of contemplative interest while the specular is driven into the background as if it were merely the material excuse for an operation. C[ode, a video-sound installation (on loop), forms part of the ongoing project entitled “Lost Grids: or How to Explain Digital Media to a Dead Socialist” (2018–Present).

Peter Freund

Peter Freund is a Barcelona-based artist, writer, and curator. His projects routinely use appropriation as an instrument to cut conceptual holes in the fabric of historical memory and related enigmas. In recent years digital materiality has infiltrated his work amid a reconceptualization of the “archival”. Peter has exhibited in the Americas, Europe, Russia, Asia, and the Middle East. Since 2018, he has collaborated with various European art and research venues. Freund is Professor of Art at Saint Mary's College of California (USA), currently on leave.
