Translucence is part of large para-cinematic sculptural project Alan Berliner calls, Think Like a Filmmaker, in which he try to breathe new life into his collection of old motion picture tools and materials – re-imagining and transforming them into sculptural forms, translucent collages, Constructivist compositions, Color Field studies, conceptual gestures, found objects, time capsules, and sometimes simply as unexpectedly beautiful things.
The videos included in Translucence represent a selection of 16mm motion picture reels, each composed of different configurations of translucent 16mm motion picture film. Each reel is mounted on a table-top rewind in front of a light box. A hand enters the frame and spins the reel at maximum speed, setting in motion a series of abstractions that produce a wide range of unpredictable visual transformations -- from sudden reversals of movement, the illusion of stasis in the midst of rapid visual energy, to the false impression that parts of the reel appear to be moving in opposite directions at the same time -- all before the spinning reel comes to a slow and graceful stop.
Alan Berliner’s focus is always on finding new meanings, new metaphors, and new ways of revealing how artifacts of an old technology can still tell new kinds of stories and excite the eye.
