THE CREATIVE PROCESS OF MY MEXICAN BRETZEL
NURIA GIMÉNEZ
In this masterclass I will talk about the creative process behind my first feature film, My Mexican Bretzel. I will explain the stages and decisions followed from the moment I found the 8 and 16mm film reels in my grandfather’s basement until the day the result was screened for the first time, eight years later. To do so, I will show several examples of parts that were discarded along the way. I will also address issues related to the use of family archive material, the blurred boundary between documentary and fiction, the relationship between text and images and the treatment of sound.
Nuria Giménez was born in Barcelona in 1976. She studied Journalism, International Relations and Documentary Filmmaking. She has lived in Berlin, Paris and London doing different types of jobs, most of them unrelated to cinema or to each other. In the last decade, she has extended her knowledge thanks to seminars and master classes of several filmmakers she admires, like Isaki Lacuesta, Andrés Duque, Virginia García del Pino, Sergei Dvortsevoy, Patricio Guzmán, Wang Bing, Mark Isaacs, Stephen Frears or Frederick Wiseman. Her first short film, Kafeneio, was presented at DocumentaMadrid 2017 and MIDBO 2017. My Mexican Bretzel is her first feature film.
